By Stephen King
Ex-alcoholic Jack Torrance is sent to take care of the old and isolated Overlook Hotel, a haunted resort with a disturbing past. Jack and his wife and son are living in the hotel together with little connection to the outside world. His son, Danny, is a 5-year-old who possesses telepathic abilities referred to as 'the shining'. Danny frequently experiences frightening visions and premonitions surrounding the hotel and encounters spirits remaining from the hotel's past tragedies. The rest of the family is also affected. Eventually, Jack reverts to his alcoholic ways and is possessed by the hotel, which drives him to attempt to murder his family. This book has themes of child/ domestic abuse and alcoholism. An immensely popular horror novel, I would recommend it to older teens and adults.
