Review of The Bird and the Blade

By Megan Bannen

Bannen tells the story of Jinghua, a princess of the Song Dynasty who becomes a slave to the Mongols. Everything she ever knew and loved is gone. In order to gain her freedom back, Jinghua is sent to kill the son of the khan of the Kipchack Khanate. When he helps Jinghua steal apples, she realizes that she doesn’t have the guts to kill anybody, much less someone who has shown honothing but kindness to her. This novel keeps readers on their feet as it’s filled with love, darkness, and major plot-twists.
